10. The Redan

The officers were accommodated in a brick V shaped building which projected rearwards from the barrack to provide flank defence of the gorge of the fort. On the east grond floor was the Officers' mess kitchen with scullery, coal store, pantry and rooms for the mess waiters.

Above were the Officers' mess, ante room and billiard room.

The east wing contained a dispensary and hospital ward on the ground floor, complete with its own kitchen. Above were the officers rooms and smaller rooms for officers' servants.

In time of need the redan was used to mount 40pr RBL guns on its upper floor firing across the entrances and rear approaches.

The Field Officer's quarters were on the upper floor of the east end of the barrack block. A married quarter for one soldier and sergeants' mess with sergeants' quarters were also on the upper floor of the barrack. The roof of the redan was fitted with embrasures to mount additional guns if needed. These were never fitted.
