Artillery of The Victorian Forts

3pr. Quick Fire Hotchkiss or Nordenfelt on Travelling Carriage MkII

The 3pr QF Hotchkiss or Nordenfelt fitted to a field carriage was intended as moveable armament for forts. The carriage is only adapted for movement on roads, not at a rapid rate, nor on rough ground. The Nordenfelt gives 15 degree of elevation whilst the Hotchkiss gives 12 degrees. They are useful up to 1,500 yards range but have no shrapnel and are therefore of more use against saps and other material defences than against troops.
