A4 card covers : 40 pages illustrated with drawings, plans and colour photographs explaining the construction, purpose and history of the two inner coastal fortifications of Gosport. Built in a much earlier period to defend the western side of Portsmouth Harbour they were largely obsolete by the time of the great Victorian defence scheme of 1860 but they served an important purpose as the home of Submarine Mining. This volume is an additional booklet in the series of booklets describing the Victorian fortifications of Portsmouth. It concentrates on the Victorian uses of the two fortifications.
