Fortification / Re: Shotley Fort/Battery

Hi Dave. It seems to be the same old story all round these days. Unless someone can make a profit, the fortifications are left to decay, or worse, demolished for housing. And let's not forget the plague of self righteous H&S "Officials" who have to protect us from these "Menaces" by destroying them. Early Saturday morning gripe over.  ::)

Thanks for the offer of a visit Jon. I'd be interested, if we can find some other things to see, so that we could make a day of it. (It's a long way to travel from Hertfordshire, just for looking at one place.)

Me and Kim popped in for a look. A fair old bit of work has been done. Well done!

Hello Muggsy. The only forts that I've been to near North Devon are Brean Down (Nr Weston S-M.). It would be a fair old drive for you, followed by a set of stairs resembling the North face of the Eiger, and a one Mile hike. Not much fun for a four year old. And Crownhill Fort in Plymouth, which is now closed to the public as far as I know. Plymouth is teeming with fortifications, but I have no idea how many you would be able to gain access to. There are plenty that you can view from outside though.
David may know of some smaller costal batteries in your area that may be of interest to you?

Here's a list that may be of use to you:

Just a few pic's of the magazines and gun rooms, taken on yesterdays KURG visit. I've been told that they are next to the now demolished blockhouse:

We found that we were getting the same photo's as eachother, so one on the video, and the other on a still camera seemed like a good idea.

If asked, I expect that the staff would allow access beyond any gates.
As for Paull Point Battery, it still has the original name plate on the left of the main gate, so why they call it Fort Paull is a mystery. I'll ask them the next time that I visit it.

I'm still getting used to the new camcorder, so be gentle with me.

What can I say, other than if the big lottery win comes in, I'll buy it.
I think that Kim has some video of it, which she'll put a link up for when she's sorted it out.
New camera with a "Natural Light" setting, so ignore the rubbish pic's.

Hmmm, sauce or beer, beer or sauce?

Me and Herself had a good mooch around this at the weekend. If you're up that way it's well worth a look. Top notch staff too!

Youtube link to follow, when my steam powered internet connection allows.

(David, we'll disk you our stuff as usual.  ;) )

Hi Chris and welcome.
I don't know if this will be of any help to you but, here's a link to The Defence Of Britain overlay for Google Earth (It's the attachment in the first post, at the top of the page.):
It may show the battery that you are looking for, if it was there during WW2.
