Grain Tower Sold
Grain Tower was put onto the market at £500,000. It was built in the Medway Channel opposite Garrison Point on Grain Spit as a supplement to the guns at Garrison Point and to prevent a landing on the island. The Tower was finally abandoned in 1946 and reverted to the role of signal station, a role which it had intermittently since 1910. It has now sold for £400,000.

Firepower Museum Closure
Firepower is due to vacate its buildings at Woolwich by 31 December 2016, according to Iain Harrison, Chairman, Royal Artillery Museum In a statement on the Museum's website he explains that running costs cannot be reduced significantly below those achieved in the last 2½ years. Therefore, it has been essential to develop a new basis for sustaining the Regiment’s Collection. The strategic review’s principal conclusion was that the long term future of the Regiment’s Collection would best be served by retaining a small heritage presence at Woolwich but moving the bulk of the operation elsewhere in partnership with others.

Spitbank Fort Restoration Award
The Portsmouth Society has awarded Spitbank Fort Best Restoration Project in 2013.
The fort has been impressively transformed into an extraordinary hospitality venue by Cla renco’s owner Mike Clare, who also owns the other seaforts: No Man’s Land and Horse Sand. Spitbank’s mechanical services havebeen renewed, its massive brick, iron and teak structure carefully repaired, while new facilities: a professional kitchen, glamorous bedrooms and bathrooms and bar have been sensitively inserted. PLC Architects were the designers and interior design was by Carol Clare. Drayton firm ITD Consultants were responsible for the planning and design of all the engineering services in this challenging location. Other firms involved included structural engineers Hamill Davies, service engineers Lowe & Oliver, and contractors Newman Scott. Together they have brought this neglected Ancient Monument back to life. Press release here: Download PDF |
