Solent Papers No.13 Blockhouse and Monckton
A4 card covers : 40 pages illustrated with drawings, plans and colour photographs explaining the construction, purpose and history of the two inner coastal fortifications of Gosport, Forts Blockhouse and Monckton. Built in a much earlier period to defend the western side of Portsmouth Harbour they were largely obsolete by the time of the great Victorian defence scheme of 1860 but they served an important purpose as the home of Submarine Mining. by davidm Fort Fareham and Elson
MPs call for action to save historic forts at Fareham and Gosport from ruin. Both are on the 'At Risk' register yet again.
Action must be taken now to stop history crumbling away forever, according to the Fareham and Gosport MPs. MP for Fareham Suella Fernandes has issued a plea for action to be taken on Fort Fareham, after it was placed on an ‘at risk’ register by the national heritage organisation Historic England. Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage also joined the calls for action, after another fort in the series, Fort Elson, was placed on the register, again ‘at immediate risk of further rapid deterioration.’ However they both have given no indication as to how they expect this to happen after so many years of neglect and inaction.
